Ontario Drinking Water Stewardship Program Grants

Available Funding For Early Action

Landowners interested in protecting municipal drinking water supplies can access a cost-share grants through the Raisin Region and South Nation Conservation Authorities. The program was created under the Clean Water Act and funding is provided by the Source Protection Program of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.
To be eligible to receive funding, the applicant’s property must be within or extend into the following areas:
• 100-metre radius around a municipal wellhead
• 200-metre radius around a municipal surface water intake
• The approved two-year time of travel for a municipal wellhead, or
• The approved intake protection zone-one (IPZ-1) for a municipal surface water intake

The program is being administered by both conservation authorities in the Raisin-South Nation Source Protection Region: Raisin Region Conservation Authority and South Nation Conservation.

What Projects Are Eligible?

Landowners can apply for grants for four types of projects:

Well decommissioning and upgrading:

Decommissioning abandoned wells, including the testing, monitoring, and technical work on water wells, and upgrading drinking water wells, may prevent these wells and poorly maintained wellheads from becoming pollutant pathways to municipal drinking water sources. The grant will cover 80 per cent of the cost up to a maximum of $4,000.

Septic system inspection and upgrades:

The program will provide funding for the repair, upgrade, or replacement of faulty or malfunctioning septic systems. Grant rates are 80 per cent, with a maximum of $7,000 or $15,000 for an advanced system.

Runoff and erosion protection:

These projects will protect municipal drinking water sources from runoff contamination and soil erosion through properly constructing or restoring buffer strips and riparian zones.

Pollution prevention reviews:

Pollution prevention reviews are available to small and medium-sized businesses that manufacture, handle, store, and dispose of materials into water, land, or air, and will identify threats to sources of municipal drinking water. Grant rate is 100% to a maximum of $12,000.
