Raisin-South Nation Source Protection Region

"The first barrier to the contamination of drinking water involves protecting the sources of drinking water." Justice Dennis O’Connor

Clean drinking water is essential to life on the planet. Our human, economic and environmental health all depend on an abundance of clean water. Ensuring that everyone has access to clean and abundant drinking water today and for the future requires implementation of a collaborative multi-barrier approach. It is a journey with the faucet being the final stop. To obtain the cleanest and safest drinking water available; one needs to go back to the source.
To protect water at its source, Ontario passed the Clean Water Act,2006 (Bill 43). The Clean Water Act provides the legislative framework for drinking water Source Protection Planning in Ontario. The goal of the Act is to make certain that Ontario’s drinking water is safeguarded from contamination or depletion. To oversee the work required by the province, the local Raisin-South Nation Source Protection Committee was formed in 2007. Taking in 7,000 km2 of the eastern most part of the province, the 15 member SP Committee is made up of members from across the Source Protection Region and is divided into three constituencies which include Municipalities, Economic Sectors (Agriculture, Aggregate, and Industrial/Commercial) as well as the General Public.
The 26 municipalities within the Raisin-South Nation Source Protection Region draw their source water supply either from groundwater through municipal well systems or via surface water body intakes located in the St. Lawrence, Ottawa, South Nation and Garry Rivers, respectively.

How Can That Be?

There is no new water on Earth. We need to protect the water we do have. Right now the focus of protection is at the source.
The Clean Water Act is designed to ensure surface and groundwater in our watersheds is clean and potable. The concept of the program is being proactive rather than reactive.

Everyone has a role to play
